Break Out is an experiment in context. Through the use of the same script a story is told twice through the life and motives of two different people, both seeking a fundamental change in their apparent natures. Both characters take steps to separate themselves from unhealthy tendencies which result in two films, back to back, from different genera and shot on a different medium, using the same words in similar situations, but telling different stories.
Originally Break Out was a writing experiment by creative director and filmmaker Ramin Eshraghi-Yazdi to see if he could write two different movies using the exact same script. Through development he gave each film context through action, performance, and setting, but also through film variables such as shooting format, lighting schemes, and shooting style. The end result is a 15 minute experiment in context using traditional narrative story telling.
The initial intention was to screen both films separately in the same shorts package but not back to back to fully take advantage of the opportunity of temporal viewing distance to add to the narrative focus of each section of the film. Presently the film can be shown as intended above or back to back as a full piece and each would suit the project and create different reactions from the viewing audience. The films can even be shown on their own as standalone pieces.
One problem is a survey of the Canadian homeless community through the lens of an eleven day cross Canada underwear drive. ‘One problem’ follows Brent King, a Calgary based philanthropist who decides to solve one problem dealing with homelessness for the period of one year, by delivering 30 thousand pairs of clean men’s underwear to 10 homeless shelters in 10 cities across Canada. With three simple goals in mind; to deliver a small luxury to as many people as possible, create some media excitement to bring attention to the issue, and learn as much as possible about homelessness in Canada, Brent acts as a guide through a sensitive and touching journey into the issues of some of Canada’s forgotten citizens.
Received a Rising Star Award at the 2012 Canada International Film Festival.
